For the Nonce

Astonishing Accounts from Nonce (aka “Vulnerable Prisoner”) Wings

Simon Sheppard

nonce1 (nónss) n. The present or particular time or occasion. Used in the phrase for the nonce. [Middle English for the nones, for the nanes, originally for then anes, “for the one (purpose or occasion)” : FOR + then, dative singular neuter of THE + anes, ONCE.]

nonce2 n. Slang. An imprisoned sex offender. [20th century : origin obscure.]

‘Nature has given women so much power that the law has very wisely given them little.’ Samuel Johnson, Letter to the Reverend Dr. John Taylor, 1763.

Sex is men’s Achilles heel and hence traditionally there were limitations on women’s capacity to use it as a weapon. During my time as a prisoner at HMP Hull I was told that around 1990 the “Vulnerable Prisoner” (aka “Nonce”) population of the prison was around 50, taking up one landing. Subsequently, with the introduction of new laws, ignoring the Statute of Limitations and removal of numerous safeguards against the conviction of innocents, by 2020 the VP population had grown to fill several wings, around 400 men.

Over 95% of the prison population is male, so this matter of the demoralisation and criminalisation of men is an issue for men generally. A feminine State seeks to emasculate men since they comprise the only likely opposition to their agenda.

Innocence (in the context of criminality) is relative. I’m sure that civil court judges would agree that there are few cases in which one party is completely blameless and the other is wholly at fault. Weighing the crimes of my fellow prisoners against the unconstitutional and unlawful behaviour of the State, and the circumstances created by the State, I posit that many if not most of the men I was locked up with were innocent.

I knew I was. My convictions all arose from handing out two small cards – one non-sexual and one by mistake, which in any case stipulated “Unmarried Women Only.”

Of course, none of my fellow prisoners had been attempting a potentially world-famous experiment as I had. Below are some of their stories, make of them what you will.

OL — Old Labourite, former schoolteacher and union rep., had hernia and bad leg, c. 75 years old. He was one of the old men who could be seen shuffling around the exercise yard. Said he can’t remember the event which took place 40-50 years previously and that it was impossible for him to have committed the offence. Long sentence. Spent £50,000 + VAT on his defence, then £22,500 on an appeal, which he lost.

He reminded me of Solzhenitsyn’s description of gulag inmates who despite their circumstances still retained loyalty to Stalin.

D1 — Was an alcoholic, his girlfriend died of cancer in about six weeks, was drunkenly and indiscriminately sexting scores of women, one turned out to be a policewoman engaged in entrapment. Pled guilty.

M1 — Family man, nearly succeeded in committing suicide on an army assault course, this was interrupted by a mobile phone call from his son. Removed noose seconds before passing out from an overdose of tranquilizers. Was not charged for 18 months, went into police station to make false confession hoping to get it over with, released on bail then attempted suicide. Sentenced to 6½ years, says innocent. Wife also on tranquilizers.

CMFH — Another assertion of entrapment. Says he was backing out of the internet exchanges. A year passed between police action and being charged (? in note). His internet correspondent was the one who raised sexual topics and the prospect of a meeting, she turned out to be a policewoman.

EE1 — Gentle Eastern European man in his early twenties with poor English: I saw his solicitor’s letter. Found young woman seated alone on a seafront bench, joking discussion about age, he asked if he could sit, she assented. She was drunk. Got six-month sentence for touching her bottom but it was actually her thigh. She immediately started texting on her mobile phone (I think this was to a friend and it was she who contacted the police). Police were lying in wait for him as he walked along the beach. Intends returning to home country.

The Curse of the Mobile Phone: Girls and women are obviously addicted to them, constantly toying with them and looking for an excuse to use them. A man approaches a girl, she sends a message to her friend, and the friend, eager to use her phone and with an appetite for drama, contacts the police. They leap into action.

P1 — Slightly built, considerate man. Was self-effacing, polite to a fault. Now married. Had affair with cousin around 1990, he was in his mid-teens, she was pubescent at first. They were still virgins at the end. It came out 13 years later and he was beaten up (I got the impression very badly) by family members. Then more years later he was prosecuted and imprisoned. Another case of exclusion from family. Told of Christian woman detective who minutely examined his hundreds of books and showed great disappointment on not finding anything untoward.

M2 — Got 4 years for putting his hand down a 15-year-old’s trousers in 1995. “Girl was one month under 16.” Both drunk and fully consensual. Two and a half years between arrest and being charged. Judge thanked him for pleading guilty, said he would have to give him the minimum sentence.

The pressure I was under to plead guilty was almost overwhelming.

HB — Separated from wife, 3 kids, 2 to him, one (youngest) stayed with wife (their choice). Reunited, wife threatened that she would ensure she got custody of all the children if they were separated again. They did separate again, and the wife’s sister invented a story of being raped repeatedly whenever she visited from out of town. Husband convicted, attempted suicide by asphixiation, dead for five minutes, now suffers memory loss. Had been recalled to prison because he had given a woman a lift (prospective housing exchange) and missed a probation appointment. He was suicidal because he got 8 years for rape but it was an IPP sentence and had been told he’d never get out of prison.

M3 — Recalled to prison for deleting five (unused) social media apps from a new mobile phone 12 years after being released, terms of licence still in force. Social media activity was cause of original offence. Recalled for six months.

EE2 — Eastern European in early 30s, downloaded images about twelve years previously, says indiscriminately, given 10 months suspended. Ten years later, using very high speed internet connection, installed Brave browser which unbeknownst to him used the Tor network using VPN, which was contrary to the conditions imposed on him ten years earlier. Had now been in prison nine months for that breach. May face deportation. Says prefers older women.

A1 — Quiet young man, accused of rape, gave in and pled guilty after two years of it hanging over him.

T — Step-daughter had seen parents engaged in sex, later she touched step-father then reversed the event claiming he had touched her.

Reversal of events in female recollection was previously found to be commonplace.

D2 — Young man born to a heroin-addicted mother, brought up by grandparents. Obviously had some crossed wires, once slapped his face and said “That felt good.” Serious sentence for rape but told me that complainant after first time had come back for more.

P2 — Photographer, morning yard: Pled guilty across the board to spare subject. Photographed girl with permission and in presence of mother. Subject was 14 and in swimming or modelling clothes. Camera set to sequence mode so several hundred images were alleged by police but really there was only 37 or so. Shopped to police by Flickr, there had been a typo in a photo caption “9 years old” instead of “39 years old.” Police then found images.

This account evinced a realisation of Britons’ serf status, where people are no longer free autonomous individuals (as we are supposed to be under the British constitution) but the property of the State. The State proceeds with prosecution even if the “offended party” doesn’t consent or objects to it. By multiple accounts, the police and judges will continue regardless.

P3 — Pentecostal minister, said he had a sense that they wanted to convict a preacher to add to their scoreboard, and by my experience this is entirely plausible. Claims were made by two women he had been close to as girl members of his congregation thirty years previously. One or both of the women were now in Canada. They had re-established contact with each other and somehow invented a story. They sent an email to the church head office and an individual there immediately assumed P3’s guilt and sent them an email apologising. This was adduced as if it were an admission of P3’s guilt and used to convict him. Stauch Christian.

K — His story might take the prize. K had spent 24 years in the armed forces, the offence for which he was convicted took place while he was stationed in Germany. His wife had a daughter from a previous marriage and while he and his wife were lying in bed of a morning his step-daughter (who had breasts) would regularly climb into bed and snuggle up to him. (See the Bancroft page for the role of the matriarch in cases of incest, also on paedophilia.) A considerable time later husband and step-daughter had an affair, there was sex but the girl remained a virgin (this was verified by medical examination). The whole family was told about it during a family meeting. Forty-two years and a marriage later, K was prosecuted. There were tears in court when the verdict was delivered. Given his advanced age and massive sentence it was unlikely K would ever see release, but he seemed most upset about the loss of his pension. This was during Covid and he was a compulsive worker, going round the wing cleaning cell doors.

EE3 — Eastern European, had affair with Eastern European girl of 15. EE3 was a decade or a little more older. He told me how the affair began. Their affair continued on a council housing estate. The house was burgled and a mobile phone was taken. The burglars harassed and tried to blackmail him because the phone contained selfies the girl had taken with them lying happily beside each other in bed (not explicit). The phone fell into the hands of the police but if I remember correctly the charge was only “sexual contact” because neither girl nor mother would testify against him. His relationship with the girl continued while EE3 was in prison and I could see them getting married, but after many months she dumped him. Still later he was released with the help of immigration lawyers.

A2 — Elderly artiste with adult children, extended family, became bisexual after first marriage failed. False accusation of molesting young male cousin(?) inspired by letter of deceased woman family member. Family did not like him in part because he wouldn’t let them smoke in his house. Long sentence and medical problems. He said the family wanted him out of the way.

Are there any male psychologists?

Name supplied – HMP Oakwood

Inside Time, Mailbag, December 2022

In over 20 years of being in prison, at various times I have spoken to a lot of psychologists. I have just realised, after speaking to my latest one, in the 20 years of prison I have never spoken to a male psychologist. Does this mean that male psychologists are not qualified to speak to prisoners?

Fair enough, I committed a sex offonce 34 years ago but have never committed another one, never been alleged nor charged with another one but every female psychologist says I am a danger to women and it is highly possible that I will commit a sexual offence in the future, even though they have no actual evidence for this.

They have done their assessment and say – fair enough, your offence was over 30 years ago but our assessment says that you are now a danger to women and you have a high risk of committing a sexual offence when you are released. So, a woman has said that I am a risk to women and because I was convicted of a sexual offence over three decades ago, and according to her crystal ball, I'm highly likely to do it again on release. I wonder if a male psychologist had done the same assessment of me would the result have been different? Just a thought.
