Moroxydine: The Story of a Mislaid Antiviral

First published in 1994 as Supplementum 183 to Acta Dermato-Venereologica.

Abstract: A review is presented of the use of moroxydine in the treatment of a number of viral disorders throughout Europe and Scandinavia. The sources are unusual in their diversity and appeared in several other languages besides English. Moroxydine may be effective against a number of DNA and RNA viruses, influenza being the original application of the substance when it emerged in the late 1950's. The drug received some attention around 1960 and the discovery of the teratogenicity of thalidomide in 1961 is one likely explanation for its current obscurity. Moroxydine's side-effects are reported to be mild and infrequent and evidence exists that the substance possesses other novel characteristics which plead for further investigation. 42 refs., ISBN 1-901240-08-8, 1998. A Preliminary Investigation of Ibogaine: Case Reports and Recommendations for Further Study

First published in 1994 in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment.

Abstract: A naturally occurring substance, ibogaine, was taken by 7 individuals who were addicted to opiates. Ibogaine, an alkaloid with psychotropic effects at doses of 200-300mg and above, was taken in single doses of 700 to 1800mg by the subjects in the study. At the end of the 24-38 hour psychoactive period induced by the drug at these doses, none of the subjects displayed significant opiate withdrawal symptoms. At the lowest dose of 700mg, 1 subject recontinued his drug abuse after 2 days; of the remaining 6 individuals who took 1000mg or above, 2 relapsed after a number of weeks, 1 reverted to intermittent heroin use and 3 appear to have remained drug-free 14 weeks or more after undergoing this experimental treatment. Ibogaine may be of value in the present and could serve as a model for the development of improved agents for the treatment of substance abuse in the future. With a new Appendix, 'Radical Science and Skunk Works: A Discussion.' ISBN 1-901240-09-6, 1998. Excerpt

Procedural Analysis

Rejected by: New Ideas in Psychology, Journal for the Theory of Social Behaviour, Human Relations, American Psychologist, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Nature, Behavioral and Brain Sciences, Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, Journal of Biosocial Science, British Journal of Social Psychology, Journal of Applied Psychology, Psychological Review, Journal of Abnormal Psychology.

Abstract: Sex and sex differences must be regarded as essential factors in any practical consideration of evolution and any attempt to rationalize human behaviour will be inadequate if it fails to include these elements. The author offers a radical psychonomic system for the analysis of human behaviour based on an evolutionary paradigm. An itemization is made of the costs and benefits of sex and it is postulated that this decomposition encompasses human interaction in its entirety. A number of sexual signals are tabulated with each being cited as an advantageous, heritable trait, otherwise known as an evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS). Signals, markers, tokens and handles are proposed as basic components by which all relational transactions can be analyzed. A theory is presented which attempts to model male and female cognition in terms of four distinct mechanisms, each with phylogenetic origins. The system is testable and may explain a number of contemporary social phenomena. With an Appendix, 'A Proposed Reidentification Syndrome in Women.' ISBN 1-901240-12-6, 1998. Game-Theoretic Models of Human Behaviour

Rejected by: Personality and Individual Differences, Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Science, Nature, Scientific American, Journal of Applied Psychology, British Journal of Social Psychology.

Abstract: The basic principles of game theory are reviewed and applied, from an evolutionary perspective, to human behaviour and male-female interaction in particular. The Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma (IPD) is discussed and contemporary models are reviewed. The procedure is proposed as a basic behavioural element. Novel mathematical models are proposed for the games of Murder, Interest and male-female interaction. The optimal female strategy in this adapted IPD model is Disguised Defection. 35 refs. ISBN 1-901240-13-4, 1998. Full Text (excepting Appendix)

Darwin Revisited

Rejected by: Quarterly Review of Biology, Genetics, British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Nature, Journal of Biosocial Science.

Abstract: Three of Darwin's major works are reviewed and contemporaneous reactions to his theory are recalled. Darwin's concept of evolutionary competition is described and challenge is made to the current notion of the hereditary mechanism, which is identified as Weismannism; Darwin, at least in his published works, is revealed as a Lamarckist. Darwin's attitude to race is discussed and particular attention is given to sexual selection in humans. Inbreeding, crossing and reversion are re-examined and Darwin's notion of prepotency is detailed. In a short conclusion, the wide disparity between the perception of racial differences in Darwin's day and now is explained in terms of a quasi-religion. ISBN 1-901240-10-X, 1998. Full Text (excepting Appendix by Obersteiner)

Social Psychology, Religious Belief, Censorship and the Holocaust

Rejected by: Ethics, Journal of Contemporary Religion, International Journal of Psychology, Psychological Bulletin, Sociological Review, Journal of Humanistic Psychology, Skeptical Enquirer, Social Forces, International Journal for Philosophy of Religion, Journal of Religion, History, British Journal of Sociology, Theory Culture and Society, Past and Present, Critical Inquiry.

Abstract: Accurate perception cannot be achieved when unpopular views are suppressed. The existing literature makes the automatic assumption that Holocaust denial is unfounded denial and by this and other means Revisionists are marginalized. In this study the Jewish Holocaust is considered in terms of the social psychological phenomena of the contagion, the heuristic, the commonplace, the phantom and the granfalloon. It is postulated that the Holocaust and its associated ideology (‘Holocaustianity’) is a quasi-religion comparable to medieval Christianity. 70 refs., with historical notes. ISBN 1-901240-11-8, 1998. ‘A New Theory of Biology’ was the title of the paper which Mustapha Mond had just finished reading. He sat for some time, meditatively frowning, then picked up his pen and wrote across the title-page. ‘The author's mathematical treatment of the conception of purpose is novel and highly ingenious but heretical and, so far as the present social order is concerned, dangerous and potentially subversive. Not to be published. Aldous Huxley, Brave New World
